Frank Sinatra a Las Vegas Legend

Frank Sinatra at Madame Tussauds Las VegasFrancis Albert “Frank” Sinatra (December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998) was an American singer and actor and became a successful solo artist in the early 1940s. Sinatra’s professional career came to a standstill by the 1950s but it revived in 1954 after winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Sinatra debuted in Las Vegas in September 1951 at the Desert Inn. During January and February 1966, Sinatra recorded his first live album, Sinatra at the Sands, at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Sinatra returned to Las Vegas in January 1974 with a performance at Caesars Palace, although he promised that he would never play there again, as during a heated argument, the manager of the resort, Sanford Waterman threatened him with a gun. As Waterman had been recently shot, he had no reasons not to comeback. Starting from October 1987 through 1990, Sinatra joined “Rat Pack” old friends Martin and Davis performing in rotation at Bally’s.

Sinatra celebrated 40 years in show business on his 64th birthday in Las Vegas, where he received the Grammy Trustees Award on a party at Caesars Palace.

Following a heart attack, Sinatra died on May 14, 1998 at the age of 82. As a tribute, the following night the lights on the Las Vegas Strip were dimmed in his honor. Frank Sinatra was also inducted into the Las Vegas Gaming Hall of Fame as one of those who shaped the gaming industry’s evolution.

Frank Sinatra was an image of Las Vegas for 43 years, starting from his first gig in September 1951 untill May 1994. He last performed at the MGM Grand. Sinatra brought sophistication to Las Vegas and everybody, including celebrities was going to Las Vegas packing the showrooms to see Sinatra’s performances.
